It took 14 years to write this book. As it evolved through phases of yellow legal pads, master's thesis and finally a book, buried embers in my belly erupted into a roaring bonfire. My "mission" was born - to increase awareness of sexual abuse and trauma so greater understanding can be gained. Primarily, changing the paradigm from victim to survivor to healing and success in society. Creative arts innately allow the right brain to bypass the linear, cognitive left brain to promote positive therapeutic outcomes. From my personal experience of creative arts, augmented by talk therapy, I acquired the resilience to lead a productive and successful life. My book provides "therapy" in the creative arts - with my history, poems and drawings, a 60 page journal for you, professional art therapy modalities and an extensive resource guide. I pray, with all my heart, as you move through your wounded spirit, that you will find healing, hope and success in your life.

Julia Carroll's Letter to Her 'Inner Child'

As a psychology professor and an art therapist, working with thousands of individuals suffering from sexual abuse, one of the key projects I assign is a letter to their "inner child". This is the same as a letter to themselves, as a child who could not stop the perpetrator, that the word, "no" had no bearing at all.

The following is a letter I wrote to my inner child. It was inspired by the four year-old photo of myself on my book cover, Healed by Light. I kept looking at it and felt so very grateful to her. As you read this letter I want you to do two things. One, to put yourself in her shoes and two, to be inspired to write a letter to your own "inner child".
